We're starting to feel a little bad now about our uncharitable assessment of this year's AVN Awards last Saturday night; now that we've returned from Las Vegas and have (mostly) caught up on sleep, we're looking at the photos we just uploaded and are feeling a pang of wistful nostalgia for all those popping flashbulbs and exposed cleavage. Maybe the awards ceremony really weren't as overlong, tedious, and self-congratulatory as we thought it was? Or maybe ace Fleshbot photographer Nikola Tamindzic has a knack for making anything seem glamorous, no matter how overlong, tedious, and self-congratulatory things might have seemed at the time?

Despite certain of our colleagues' seeming lack of enjoyment of the AVN Awards (oh, but will they be back trolling for extra-long sheet-hookers to snort lines off of next year? Yes!), I was pleasantly surprised with how the show reduced the instances of cringitude from last year's (x) to this year's (x-5).

People like Nick Manning (seen here with former Hustler contract lady Jessica Jaymes, already experienced with people named Nick) intoned his famous-in-the-industry catchphrase "Droppin' Loads!" several times for red carpet cameras and onstage, cracking up every time at how silly it was. As this event grows bigger and more expensive, it would be Mandalay-mentable to forget that porn is supposed to be fun and not taken so seriously, despite its recent proximity to broody fare like "Corruption" and joy vacuums like Gene Simmons (who presented an award for something, but we were too busy enjoying our lives to pay attention). - GP

The figures documenting the average career span of a female porn performer are not nearly as vague as those purporting to reflect how much money the adult industry makes. The truth is that most actresses stay in the business for about a year, total, including hiatuses and premature retirements. If anything, our recent trip to Las Vegas was significant for seeing lots of ex-porn stars coming out of the woodwork to bask in the familiar glow.

One of the newly crowned AVN Performer of the Year Hillary Scott's many qualities is her lack of attention-seeking behavior. The multi-AVN-Award-winning Chicago gal turns on the charm when necessary but seems most comfortable keeping casual.

In that time Scott has appeared in dozens of movies that demonstrate her range as an actor (for her role in this year's Best Picture winner "Corruption" she cried on cue) and the elasticity of her anus.

Had you been among the thousands of porn fans who paid upwards of $107 a ticket to watch the 2007 AVN Awards from nosebleed seating at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, you might have come to the conclusion that the American adult entertainment industry sees fit to celebrate its accomplishments in a venue better suited to Whitesnake concerts than High Art; that said industry is still amused by anal sex and Viagra jokes; and that Wicked Pictures' releases this year were better than everyone else's. However, had you not left early to beat the taxi line like we did, you would also have seen the lovely Tristan Taormino take home the trophy for Best Gonzo Release, the first time the award was won by a woman; the equally lovely Buck Angel win Best Transexual Performer, the first time (though we hope not the last) the award was won by an FTM actor; the eminent Joanna Angel win Best Porn Comedy for "Joanna's Angels 2: Alt Throttle"; the shoulder-stink avoiding Mika Tan win Underrated Starlet of the Year; and Fleshbot faves Jack The Zipper and Eon McKai tie for Best All-Sex Release for "Blacklight Beauties" and "Neu Wave Hookers" respectively.

By the fourth day of the Adult Entertainment Expo, things have the sullied, tired air of a hooker on the last night of Fleet Week: all those glossy larger-than-life posters of the various major studios' contract star lineups don't seem quite as enticing as they did when we first walked beneath them a mere three days ago, and the sight of thousands of 8x10 glossies and discount strip club invites discarded and trampled underfoot by careless fans seem even more depressing than they usually do. Still, we soldiered on to bring you Fleshbot photographer Nikola Tamindzic's record of the last day of the fair: like a pornified Brigadoon with suitcase pimps and breast implants, the whole spectacle will fade into misty memory come tomorrow, not to appear again until next January. Needless to say, we're already looking forward to next year.
